Embedded Threads

Solo Exhibition

Embedded Threads is an installation of ceramic tiles of impressions made from decorative Chinese placemats.

This exhibition explores subversions of traditional decorative elements and processes, into contemporary frameworks that reflect Yang’s experiences being third generation Chinese Australian and re-embracing a neglected cultural identity.

These pieces explore family heritage through its embroidered elements that feature mythology and nature.

Using delicate placemats sourced from Yang’s Grandparents collection into clay allows him to explore subversions of soft and delicate materials. This recontextualises techniques and processes speaking to the fluidity in identity and how this tension within is prevalent to his relationship with his heritage and identity.

The title of the exhibition Embedded Threads refers not only to the physical process and material but the embedding of culture and family with the threads of rich ancestry and heritage.

The experimental use of textiles and sculptural elements are ongoing throughout his practice in creating dynamic and multi-faceted motifs throughout his work.

Embedded Threads expands on Yang’s continual journey of exploring cultural background in attempts to reconnect and re-embrace.
