Walk on By

Walk on by is an installation of figurative paintings and textile sculptures relating to contemporary notions of beauty within intersecting cultures – namely queer and Asian cultures which I am personally immersed within.

This body of work explores the intersectionality of identity, encompassing the spectrum of neglect, acceptance and celebration of culture reflected in my own interpersonal relationship with identity.

The conceptual focus of these hybrid paintings and textile works converge on the glorified and fierce Asian figure, with attempts to regain power and self-love. The exhibition dissects the turmoil of contemporary cultural identity, including abandonment, embracement and acceptance through employing decorative silks/textiles and figurative paintings.

The title Walk on by refers to contemporary Asian individuality being presented through stereotypes, undesirable, foreign, peripheral and un-Australian. This exhibition speaks to the tension between conforming to what Australian society considers is the beauty standard and living authentically without these pressures. Through layered imagery of traditional Chinese fabrics and symbolism alongside painted figures I hope to become a vessel that speaks to and releases this tension.

From a place of insecurity growing up, I wanted to channel my alter ego that is untouchable, empowered and empowering; with hopes to bridge this shield with my reality. I hope audiences in the Asian community who can relate to not feeling or being seen or worthy of attention are empowered to feel exceptional because of our unique identity and culture.
